February 8, 2012 — 8th Grade Art
8th Grade Artists have been very busy since the last post about their work.
They have begun a watercolor landscape unit, with our special guest art instructor Susan Jenkins, from Northwest Art Center in Duvall. They did a study of a common watercolor landscape with her, and these are now hanging in the Multi Purpose Room. Susan is traveling for most of the month of February, and the students will be completing their individual watercolor landscapes with our guest artist when she returns to our class – probably at the end of Feburary.
Students studied the abstract sculptural art of Elizabeth Catlett, then applied what they had learned to create a figurative sculpture that makes a statement about the unique characteristics that make us human. These pieces have been formed and are going into the kiln to be bisque fired before we glaze them – probably some time next week.

8th Grade Students are currently working on creating an Illuminated Initial. They have studied the history of Illuminated Manuscripts, and are now creating a design around a letter they chose “out of a hat”. They are including a border, and will be painting the design on Illustration Board. Click on the link below to view the assignment sheet for this project.

We have started a new quarter, and the information shared below is the same that I shared with 2nd Quarter familes..but I’m posting it again for you.
6th Grade Artists are working on a “Self Portrait”. They have spent some time listing some self characteristics, and some of their favorite items – such as favorite food, thing to do in their leisure time, etc. They are making thumbnail sketches of these items, and are carefully arranging them in a well though out c0mposition. They are learning some of the elements of art and principles of design to help them plan out their compositions. The brainstorming form for their favorite things can be found here Microsoft Word – Self Portrait Students will also be writing a description of their work – including the location of the favorite items in their composition, and what type of art technique(s) they used to show space or depth in their composition.
Here is the self evaluation and grade sheet that the students will self-assess their work, and be graded from. Microsoft Word – Self Portrait Evaluation
The students are also directing parents or guardians to the 6th/7th Grade Art Syllabus on this edublog, and when they bring in the signature sheet, they will earn 5 points. The form is due on Monday, February 13, 2012.

7th Grade Art Classes are working on putting together a “pictoral glossary” of the Elements and Principles of design in their sketchbooks. Using the Crystal Productions Student Guide, in class discussion and class videos, students are recording the definition of each of the terms, and some sub-headings that describe these important design concepts.
The concepts are important for the entire course, and the students need to define and/or illustrate each of the terms given to them in class. This assignment is a Pass/Fail assignment. All of the terms must be identified for Elements (30 points), and Principles (30 Points). This resource will be so important for the students as we move through their time in art this class term. The students will be given two opportunities to show their work for evaluation. The list of terms that they need to identify and illustrate can be found by clicking on this link Microsoft Word – ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES SKETCHBOOK REQUIREMENTS
October 19, 2011 — 8th Grade Art
8th grade artists are continuing to explore color and now abstract composition painting using acrylic paints. The project they are working on is called Abstract Construct and Deconstruct. They are working on the first phase – constructing – now.
The assignment is about using specific color schemes, and painting techniques to paint 4 different layouts or commonly used compositions. The 8th grade artists are composing their pieces in a very abstract way, exploring the layouts they have been shown in examples and in the handout included below. The students will be assessed on completion of the four 7″ x 9″ composition panels. Each panel is worth 10 points for completion, or 40 points total.

7th Grade artists learned about artist Georgia O’Keefe today. They saw part of a video and “met” her in her later years. She talked about her art, and being a female artist in the United States in the early 1900′s. Then we explored some of her paintings - both her abstract flower paintings and her bone paintings she composed in the New Mexico desert. The students are now ready to create their own abstract flower drawing/painting, using oil pastels. The assignment sheet and evaluation sheet are attached below.
